How timely heart surgery transformed one child’s health and restored hope to an entire family

“When a child’s heart is given the chance to heal, an entire family begins to live again.”

For Patricia Naluze of Gayaza Gita, motherhood became a journey marked by fear, uncertainty, and an urgent search for help. Her young son had been diagnosed with a hole in the heart—a condition that left him frequently unwell and placed a heavy emotional and financial burden on the family. Instead of enjoying the ordinary milestones of early childhood, his days were overshadowed by illness, hospital visits, and the constant concern that his condition could worsen.

Doctors advised that the child needed corrective heart surgery in India. For Patricia, the recommendation brought both hope and anguish. The treatment could give her son a healthier future, but its cost was far beyond what she could afford. With limited support and no clear way forward, she reached a point of deep desperation. She even considered selling one of her kidneys if that was what it would take to save her child. Her experience reflects the painful reality faced by many parents: knowing that treatment exists, yet being unable to reach it because of cost.

Patricia’s turning point came through social media. A video she shared on TikTok connected her to Eveline and the Healthy Heart Foundation Uganda (HHF). What began as a mother’s public appeal for help opened a pathway to people and organizations willing to stand with her family. Through the Smiles on Children Rotary program, support was mobilized for the surgery, making it possible for Patricia’s son to travel to India and receive the life-changing procedure he urgently needed.

The successful surgery did more than repair a heart defect; it gave the child the freedom to experience childhood with renewed strength. Patricia says that since the operation, her son no longer falls sick as often as he did before. His repeated medical visits have greatly reduced, and she has needed to take him back to the Uganda Heart Institute only once. Now three years old, he is walking, talking, and growing well—simple milestones that carry extraordinary meaning for a family that once lived with daily fear.

For the child, recovery has meant a better chance to play, learn, interact, and develop without illness constantly interrupting his life. Improved health also gives him a stronger foundation for the future. His story shows why timely diagnosis and access to specialized cardiac care are so important: when a child receives the right treatment, the result is not only survival but also the possibility of a fuller and more active life.

The transformation has been equally profound for Patricia. Before the surgery, much of her energy was consumed by worry—about her son’s pain, the cost of treatment, and what might happen if help did not come in time. Following the successful procedure, that fear has been replaced by relief and gratitude. She can now watch her son grow with greater confidence, rather than continually preparing for another episode of illness. Reduced hospital visits also mean less disruption to family life and fewer pressures associated with seeking repeated medical care. Patricia has now returned to full time employment after taking a sabbatical to look after her son.

Patricia expresses heartfelt appreciation to the India Association of Uganda, Healthy Heart Foundation Uganda, the Smiles on Children Rotary program, and every person who contributed to her son’s treatment. Their support demonstrates what can happen when communities, health advocates, and partners come together around a child in need. Each contribution became part of a much larger gift: restored health for a child, peace of mind for a mother, and renewed hope for a family.

At HHF, stories such as Patricia’s reaffirm the importance of connecting children living with heart conditions to timely information, medical care, and compassionate support. A successful heart surgery changes more than a diagnosis. It can ease the emotional and financial strain on parents, enable children to return to normal development, and restore dignity to families who have spent months or years asking what comes next. Patricia’s son is now walking, talking, and thriving. His recovery is a powerful reminder that when a child’s heart is given the chance to heal, an entire family begins to live again.
