Why We Exist

Every year, millions of lives are lost to cardiovascular disease — many of them unnecessarily. In Uganda and across Africa, heart disease is rising rapidly, yet awareness, early detection, and patient support remain limited.

Behind every heart attack or stroke is a family facing fear, uncertainty, and often a lack of information about what to do next.

The Healthy Heart Foundation exists to change this.

We work to raise awareness about heart disease, promote prevention and early screening, and support patients and families affected by cardiovascular conditions. By empowering communities with knowledge and access to care, we believe many heart-related deaths can be prevented.

Our mission is simple but urgent: to reduce cardiovascular disease in Uganda through prevention, early detection, treatment partnerships, and post-surgical support for vulnerable children.

HEART ATTACK

What is a
Heart Attack

A heart attack happens when blood flow to your heart is blocked. It can be life-threatening and needs emergency treatment in hospital.

  • Chest pain which may feel like crushing or squeezing on your chest – the pain may also spread to your arm, neck and jaw
  • Feeling short of breath
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
  • Feeling like you have indigestion – you may have a burning feeling in your chest and feel full or bloated
  • Sweating
  • Pale, blue or grey skin – on black or brown skin this may be easier to see on the palms of the hands

When to call emergency services

Call a doctor if :

  • You have chest pain that feels tight or like squeezing on your chest
  • You have chest pain that's spreading to your arms, neck or jaw
  • You're having severe difficulty breathing – you're gasping, choking or not able to get words out

Main Program

Gift a Heart, Save a Life

Gift a Heart, Save a Life is one of our flagship programs at the Healthy Heart Foundation, launched in 2023 with a simple but powerful goal: to give children born with heart disease a chance to live.

Across Uganda, many families face the heartbreaking reality of knowing their child needs heart surgery but cannot afford it. Through this program, we work with partners, donors, and compassionate individuals to raise awareness about childhood heart disease and mobilize the resources needed to support vulnerable children who require life-saving cardiac treatment.

For us, this is more than a program. It is about hope for parents, healing for children, and a future that every child deserves.

How You Can Help

Every child deserves the chance to grow, play, and dream of the future. But for many children born with heart disease, survival depends on access to treatment
You can help us change that story.

You can support this program by:
• Donating to support life-saving surgeries and follow-up care
• Sponsoring a child’s treatment and giving a family renewed hope
• Partnering with us as a corporate or institutional partner
• Supporting our fundraising events and campaigns
• Helping spread awareness about childhood heart disease

Together, we can give more children the gift that every parent hopes for — a healthy heart and a future full of life.
